Gateway Project Summary:
Recognizing that formal schooling alone doesn’t always lead to economic activity, DIL’s Gateway Initiative is aimed at preparing its students for success beyond the school walls. By developing core leadership/life skills among our scholars and helping them identify and gain access to professional and economic opportunities not readily available to the marginalized sectors of society, DIL’s Gateway Initiative will serve as bridge between education and income generation and financial independence.
The Gateway Initiative has two components;
I. The Leadership and Life Skills Academy is an after-school program teaching core life/interpersonal, financial and business skills to better enable our scholars to make thoughtful life decisions and prepare them for employment, self or paid, and productive economic activity.
II. Bridge to Success is based on the understanding that successful economic activity and improving livelihoods, whether it is self-employment or working for someone else, requires access to a range of services from job vacancies, micro-credit, to networking and mentoring opportunities. This access is too often unavailable to the most marginalized populations. Bridge to Success proposes engaging with business professionals, experts from diverse fields and other DIL partners to serve as mentors, networks and facilitators and create a social and professional infrastructure that DIL graduated and others can access. As a result, these individuals will move from marginalization to effective participation in the national and global economy.
